The coronavirus pandemic has impacted many industries and the home space is no exception. More people are home and comfort, space, and functionality are all more important than ever. As a result, we are forced to reimagine our home spaces to meet the demands of our new lifestyles.
I wanted to learn more about these changes so I recently took a class on 2021 interior design home trends and wanted to share with you the key design changes that builders are already seeing/anticipating for the year 2021:
- Color of choice
- Navy (walls, cabinetry, tiles)
- Gives a more calming/relaxed feel
- Navy (walls, cabinetry, tiles)
- Biophilic design elements
- Bringing nature back into your interior space
- Examples: open courtyards, plants inside for a refreshing mood, nanawall to bring the indoor/outdoor connectivity
- Bringing in elements of nature
- Examples: spa showers, large windows to let in more light, water features, basket shaped light fixtures (natural elements versus heavy metals)
- Light woods versus dark woods
- Blonde floors – see less dust, unique light wood floor patterns (chevron patterns), adding wood to the ceiling, wood accent walls
- Light woods with darker contrast elements (i.e. black window trims + light oak floors)
- Statement powder rooms
- Badge of honor to show off your home to your guests
- Bold wallpaper or bold accent walls
- Incorporation of biophilic elements
- Memorable elements that are unique and bold where other areas of home may be safer
- Open space and light throughout home
- Tuxedo kitchen (not just black and white) – mixed colors, light wood floors in kitchen to bring out cabinetry, dark blue cabinetry, high contrast/high design, painted wood (grays, blues, and blue/greens to add color)
- Multi-functional spaces
- Examples: coat closets turned into children study spaces, built-in bunk beds in a large bonus room, closet under the stairwell turned into a small study area, reading nook, or dog friendly area
- Guest rooms turned into additional office spaces
- Design goals – Unique, personality, tells your story, love where you live
